Hi, Wireless connectivity issue with vista is increasing day by day. 1. No matter which brand you have same problem comes back 2. Toshiba and HP laptops with Vista premium and buisness has this issues. 3. It connects to access point fine,through DHCP - its able to get proper IP and dns from the servers 4. Even if it is added to profile HOME - it does'nt connect. My question is same wireless connection works seamlessly with all other OS except the great Vista. It is suppose to make wifi networking easier but on the contrary its making the work of network admin miserable. If a wireless adapter is able to pull up all the required IP and DNS - it is suppose to go online Secondly, the wireless router is vista compatible still no - I have updated the wireless driver - used static IP still no. Is there anyone who can give a right solution to this issue ????????????????

Hi Techsajan, After reading the post, I would like to confirm with you if the network connectivity status always shows Local Only and you fail to access the Internet on the Windows Vista machine when connecting to wireless router. I followed all the steps from 1-4 - still its says local even though its able to get IP and DNS dynamically from the DHCP server.2. I enabled and disabled the firewall also still the same issue.3. I had installed the hotfix before i posted this thread.Hopefully there is something might be small that is stopping this system from going online - but all XP works perfectly.I even installed the available latest wireless driver.Device : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Driver details : 11.5.0.3211/8/2007Still the same issueI hope you have the details now to narrow down the problemThanks,Sajan Joseph

Hi Sajan Joseph, I have checked the Netmon file and found that there are only DNS Query sent from Windows Vista machine but no Reply is received. Thats the cause of the issue. In this case, I suggest contacting the wireless AP manufacturer for further troubleshooting and checking the following points: Is the configuration in the wireless AP correct? Are the DNS Query packets dropped by the wireless AP? If so, why? Does the wireless AP forward DNS Query packets to the DNS Servers (65.106.7.196 and 65.106.1.196)? Hi Josh,1. If it is the problem with the AP - why pre - vista wireless systems are going online.2. The DHCP server is server by pix firewall.3. The AP i mentioned is a linksys router with the DHCP disabled. MODEL # WRT350N - which is vista compatible as well.Thanks,Sajan Joseph

Hi Josh, I have encountered the same problem as Sajan but it's with the wired connection so I don't think it's his AP. Sometimes vista decides that the connection should be "local only" I can ping around the internal network but can't transverse networks (ie. go through a pix firewall to the internet) XP works just fine on the same wire. I know it's not the network infrastructure and I have verified everything from link to mac addresses, arp and ip to dns. I've seen it on two vista machines now and the fix has simply been a reboot to let vista re-decide what the network should look like. Thanks Mick

Hi Sajan Joseph, The wireless AP is not necessarily the cause of the issue. However, the product manufacturer need to be involved in order to further analyze the issue because we need to understand how the AP handles the network packets sent from Windows Vista. I have had exactly the same problem with my two VISTA machines. The only way I was able to get "local and internet" access was to do the following: 1. Go to "connect to a network" and right click onyour wireless network and select "status" 2. Select the bottom area (under "activity") "properties" 3. In the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window select the "Networking" tab and highlight IPv4 and select "Properties" at the bottom. 4. In the "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties" window select the "Alternate Configuration" tab and then select "User Configured" and fill in the top 4 lines with the correct information for your network. The most important one which I think is causing this problem is the "preferred DNS server" which VISTA does not seem to capture unless you give it to them here. 5. Then OK your way out. Please let me know if this works for you or if I was just lucky. My machine has been working fine since I tried this.

Hi, I have the same problem with my laptop HP dv6502AU. (Vista) I can get connected to my home (but takes some time to get ip) but i can not get connected to Public libraray or Public network ...It shows excellent signles but when i connect it shows Local Only. i can not surf. ( I think some dns problem ...) but that is Public library where i am member and have access . Those ppl dont know how to resolve this. Hi I have been stuggling with getting my VISTA notebook on the internet for weeks. My vista notebook works on all other internet connections, both via ethernet cable and wirelessly. I get a local only connection for about 2 minutes and then it disconnects, I don't seem to be getting any Internet connectivity at all. I have tried every possible fix that I have found on the internet (after searching for weeks), my ISP has not been able to helpme, nor DLINK who provided the modem (DSL-G604T).
